Nancy Chan CV & Artist Statement
ALWAYS IS ALWAYS FOREVER
Nancy Chan, Matt Momchilov & Jesse Schlesinger
September 11th - October 17th 2009
Nancy Chan's newest series, informally named "Giants," depicts pairs of individuals, one sitting atop the other's shoulders. These drawings, each measuring 6 feet high, bounce between being awkward, playful, endearing and daunting. Chan works primarily with sumi ink on watercolor paper. Her focus is on the individual, the space they occupy, and sentiment. She is interested in how people carry themselves, how they move when alone or in the company of others. Subtle nuances are discovered and celebrated in these observations of friends, their lovers, and the self.
Chan received a painting/drawing BFA with high distinction from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 2006. Outside of the San Francisco Bay Area, her work has been shown in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Osaka, Japan. She continues to live and work in Oakland, CA where she was born and raised.
