June 9th - July 14th 2006: That Which Bites Sharply, backroom: Nick Mohanna.
This is Nickolas Mohanna's first solo show. His contemplative work fits into the current fastidious drawing movement, however his work is primarily motivated by sets of rules and constraints that he creates before the drawing. His drawings act more like a documentary of his process than as "drawing". However his drawings are meticulously made and beautiful in their own right.
An example of one of the boundaries set by Mohanna to create his work:
Coalescent Side Arm Device
30 x 21
ink and rubber stamp
Process: created with a found rubber stamp, to reveal a sense of spontanaity or chance in the materials used. Using my own plan----whatever is in front of me at any given moment is the catylst; is the idea.
Each piece has a set of rules dictating the form of the drawing.
Bands:
Ryan Unks & New Dynasty
music organized by Dan Johnson & Nick Mohanna
Ryan Unks manipulates feedback loops, acoustic instruments and found objects in an approach to sound collage, which draws heavily from the early 70's experimental music. His solo output dramatically differs from his fixation on sonic excess, which dominated past collaborations in grindcore acts, Fate Of Icarus and Creation Is Crucifixion.
New Dynasty is Daniel McCormick and Lili, born out of a love of bass drums, guqin and deep echo. Previous collaborations have occured under the names Baby Bear and schulder1717 , but this one is different. New Dynasty plays whatever they can get their hands on: guitars, echo machines, computers, cowbells, keyboards, wood, and they also sing. They have played such acts as Water Wolves , Washington Toho Koto Society and Pocket Rockets.
