ARTIST STATEMENT
Jesse Schlesinger is a visual and social practice artist residing in San Francisco. He works in a variety of media, including sculptural installation, photography, and drawing. His interdisciplinary work touches on but is not limited to: the handmade aesthetic, the private and the public, and the concept of (co)habitation. Drawing is an element of his art practice that explores craft and spatial conceptions, working directly and indirectly with experiences of dwelling. The drawings are created with natural materials exploring both the ephemeral and the infinite in understanding the idea and emotion of home. Schlesinger's practice reveals a conversation between culture, agriculture, and the natural world. His work is a direct synthesis of his personal history with carpentry, eight years of experience farming with Dirty Girl Produce and a dream of Black Mountain and the "back-to-the-land movement."
Schlesinger received a painting/drawing BFA with high distinction from the California College of the Arts in 2008. He has shown at Triple Base Gallery, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and Lobot. Recently, he took a position as a co-curator at 18 Reasons, the Bi-Rite space for art, food, and community.
