Artist Statement
It is January 1992 in Montana. A moody sky is above our heads and a lonely highway below our tires. Winter is all around us. Nearing darkness, a white landscape passes by my window as we drive. After the early winter sun goes down, the earth and the sky become the same color: a complex and glowing white that seems to hold every color behind its surface. Black, leafless trees pattern the nearby mountains. Dirty Boots by Sonic Youth begins to play on the car stereo, providing a layer of mood over the quickly passing landscape. The mountains and trees seem still, even as we race down the highway. Movement and stillness surround us. It is cold and dark and a little magical.
